Bug#315300: mailcheck: 'dies unexpectedly' on every mailcheck with POP3/IMAP

The mailcheck applet is completely unusable for me: as soon as I fill in
my POP3 server's host name, I get a password prompt. When I filled that
in, the application 'dies unexpectedly' periodically, with the same
frequency as the mail check.
