(May I upload your file to a public place? It might contain some
sensitive informations on your system, but I presume you did not send
it to the bug report because of its size.)

I had a first look at the output, I think it's ok to guess some basic
things. For example, I grepped on "execve" and saw some strange holes
 between 04:33:57 and 04:35:57, or between 04:35:57 and 04:37:57.
During the first period, the following PIDs are active:
 29334 29336 29341 29345 29355 29369

And during the second one, these are active:
 29334 29336 29345 29355 29452 29455

I examinated a bit closer the first hole, and saw a bunch of 5 seconds
timeouts in select(), especially from PID 29355 which seems to be
xscreensaver having trouble to connect to X...

Could you try creating a /home/sam/bin/xscreensaver with a dummy shell
script just to see if that improves your startup time?

(It might be a completely bad guess though.)

Anyway, and just for completeness, could you please explain how the
strace ended? Did you "kill" a particular program? Did you press ^C?
   Please attach your .gnome2/session.

   Regards,
