Bug#299663: gnome-applets: mixer_applet2 no longer finds audio device

I don't log out much, and when I did and logged back in, after a reboot,
the gnome mixer applet no longer works.  Audio in general works fine, and 
aumix works fine.

The volume on the applet, however, is always at the bottom; if I drag it higher,
then it just snaps back.

If I select "Open Volume Control" I get an error dialog with the text: 
"Sorry, no mixer elements and/or devices found".

If I select "Preferences", I get a dialog to select audio channels to control,
with an empty list.

Note that I am not using alsa.
