My experience was exactly the same as tb@becket.net.

I had recently upgraded my existing Sarge system in the past week.

gstreamer did not work.

I ran gst-register-0.8 and this fixed the big volume control panel, but 
not the simple sliding volume control.

I uninstalled all the gnome stuff, and reinstalled with the latest 
updated packages using aptitude and all was well, and I did not have to 
independently run gst-register.  My previous upgrade that did not work 
was made with gnome-apt.  Gnome-apt crashes a lot for me after installs, 
so I don't quite trust it.
