When I logout and relogin to gnome, it resets the desktop background to
gray.  If I run the gnome control center and check the background
setting, it is still set to the color I previously entered.  If I alter
the setting, like change to horizontal gradient then back to solid
color, the set color takes effect.  This repeats every time I logout and
log back in.

 Yes, nautilus is required.
