Can you please:
1. quote the exact message displayed by balsa.

2. if you connect to the SSL-ized imap service, please run:
openssl s_client -crlf -connect xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:imaps
and type then ". LOGOUT", and report any errors that this tool reports.

My *first* impression is that your server certificates are set up  
incorrectly but more information is needed to ascertain that.
