Bug#332882: gnome-terminal hangs at the gnome splash screen on gnome start

When Gnome is unexpectedly stopped (e.g. kernel crash or killing the X
server), the next time a user logs in their account through gdm the
following happen:

- Gnome hangs at the splash-screen, particularly when "gnome-terminal"
  is listed at the bottom.
- During this period no gnome-terminal can be started (e.g. from
 "Actions"-->"Run Application...")
- The number of workspaces is reduced to 6, ignoring the previous
  default (in my case 9).

All of the above are displayed in the attached screenshot.

I'm not so sure gnome-terminal is absolutely to blame. In some cases,
the splash screen does go away. But 100% of the time, the desktop
defaults to 6 workspaces. Other applets and panels remain unaffected.

This bug may not belong to the gnome-terminal package, but I'm not
sure against which package I should file it.

The above behavior has been happenning for the past 2 years (at the
time running sarge unstable, all the way through current stable sarge)
