Right i misunderstood your mail. I though your package management program
wanted to remove gnome-menu's and friends. 

Which comes to the real issue, gamin doesn't work for you. Could you test if
gnomevfs-monitor (from libgnomevfs2-bin) works for you ?  Just give some file
as argument and see if it gives output when you change it.

Also ensure that all programs that use fam are restart so there now really
using gamin (in case of doubt, reboot :)
