OK, so something weird is going on. Could you please:
* install libgnomevfs2-0-dbg
* locate the gnome-panel PID with "pidof gnome-panel"
* run "gdb /usr/bin/gnome-panel `pidof gnome-panel`"
* at the gdb prompt, type "thread apply all bt"
* send me the output.
