Just tried that, didn't work.

I have the epiphany-extensions Debian package installed. I just
disabled all extensions and enabled the error viewer extension
instead. Which gives me a window full of errors like this:
Javascript-fejl i http://mail.google.com/mail/?view=page&name=gp&ver=sh3fib53pgpk&auto=1 på linje 4:
Error in parsing value for property 'cursor'. Declaration dropped.
"fejl" means "error" and "på linje" means "at line". The other errors
are very similar except for the name of the property, although the
second line is sometimes "Unknown property 'filter'. Declaration
dropped.". I've attached a screenshot.
About the upgrade: maybe it's a xulrunner upgrade. When I upgraded
last time, I hadn't upgraded the system for a while. Or maybe it's
unrelated.
I just tried running Epiphany on the root account. Behold, it loads
gmail fine. Any hints?
