I used apt-get in this case, but I don't remember ever installing 
alsa-base specifically.
Still, I wouldn't expect missing functionality like this (which seems 
quite basic), when not installing a Recommends: package. But then again, 
I'm not sure how it can be fixed if you can't let it depend on it.
