Bug#348346: gnome: Applications menu disappears

I can not access any program in the gnome applications menu, when I try to
activate it, the menu appears for a fraction of a second and then
disappears. I added a second gnome menu to the taskbar, but it has the same
symptoms. After displaying the menu briefly (maybe the computer is too
fast?), a small square box appears at the left side below the menu,
indicating an empty menu? This only happens for the Applications and Desktop
menues, the Places menu works fine. Here is a screenshot showing the
