Bug#350288: gdm: Not started after upgrade

GDM didn't get started after the upgrade from 2.6. This meant that when
running gdmsetup a misleading error message was displayed: something
like "can not access the GDM config file" when I suspect it really meant
"can not connect to the daemon for configuration". Since gdmsetup is run
as root, perhaps it should start GDM if it's not already running.

Another consequence of GDM not being started is that after I logged out,
I was stuck in text mode. Someone who doesn't know how to log in at the
console and restart GDM, or even reboot, would find further computer use
difficult. :)
