Back in August 2003 the NEWS file for Rhythmbox 0.5.2 said:

* Release audio device on pause [Benjamin Otte (GStreamer) Bastien
  Nocera (xine)]

This no longer happens.  I pause Rhythmbox and the audio device is
kept open by Rhythmbox.  If I quit Rhythmbox the device is no longer
listed as open by any process.  I'm using the ALSA gstreamer backend.

This is an important change in behaviour so it should be considered a
regression.  On a laptop with dodgy sound driver it is often necessary
to remove the relevant module(s) when suspending so that sound will
work after resuming.  If Rhythmbox keeps the device open then the
module(s) can not be removed before suspending.

I'm not sure when the change happened...
