I have gigs of space on the disk, so that's not the problem.
Got similar results:
Copy the .gnome2/rhythmbox dir
Remove rhythmbox-applet from panel
dpkg -r rhythmbox-applet rhythmbox
dpkg -i rhythmbox-applet_0.1.7-1_amd64.deb rhythmbox_0.8.8-13_amd64.deb
Add applet again.
Press play on it to open Rhythmbox.
Play something.
Start Synaptic, then upgrade.
Close RB.
Dir is the same as the copy.
Start RB again (now 0.9). I did this twice with two different results:
1) First time, opened slowly (took a long time refreshing the song
list).
On closing it, rhythmdb.xml is now smaller than the copy.
2) Second time, RB hung when reading the song list. I killed it
eventually, then started it again. It showed the correct number of
songs, but kept showing "Loading.." even after hitting that total. I
closed it with the window's X button OK. This time rhythmdb.xml has grown!
Note that I started with the already corrupted db as I hadn't backed
that up when I hit this.
