still - the behavior that you're describing doesn't correspond to anything
that ncurses would touch.  It's possible that a recent upgrade that you've
overlooked has a relevant library, or that gnome-terminal simply has an
interesting bug that's triggered by some condition that we haven't considered.

(gnome-terminal has a lot of runtime dependencies ;-)
