I have completely trashed my Debian installation at least twice since
making that report. Now I am running Sarge w/ kernel 2.6 and Gnome.  I
do not see the bug now and I didn't notice when it stopped
happening. My life has been somewhat unsettled since summer '05. I
think it should be marked 'can't reproduce' or something like that.

My guess is that the problem was caused by some junk in some old config
file that didn't get properly corrected during an upgrade, but now all
evidense is lost and we will never know the truth in detail.
