That's too bad, I'm starting to run out of ideas on this one.
The big difference in gnome-control-center between 2.14 and 2.16/2.18
when it comes to sound is the new gstreamer sound profiles. I don't know
if it can effect esound though. I guess you already tried to play around
with the settings?
Another idea could be to try libesd-alsa0 instead of libesd0.
If this doesn't give any results I suggest waiting for the rest of GNOME
2.18 and then contacting upstream.
