I've done other tests by typing gnome-terminal from an xterm.
Each time the window disappears, I get the following error:

(gnome-terminal:32090): Gtk-CRITICAL **: gtk_file_system_unix_get_parent: assertion `g_path_is_absolute (filename)' failed
