Bug#436887: gnome-control-center: gnome-settings-daemon mangles my keyboard layout when inside vnc

When running gnome inside VNC, my keyboard mapping is
mangled beyond all recognition (hjkl becomes k;'` for
example and all control keys stop working).
This is the behaviour described at
<http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=382441> and
<https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/vino/+bug/112955/comments/3>.
If I selectively start gnome processes (as that launchpad
bug suggested as a workaround) the problem only occurs when
I start gnome-settings-daemon, which also reports the
following:

Subsequently killing gnome-settings-daemon does not fix my
keyboard layout.
This was apparently reported upstream at
<http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=440429> which
has a patch. I'm just about to try it.
