In the meantime, I switched to a complete Gnome environment, so
gnome-panel and nautilus start when I start X. Everything works as
expected. However, i have my ~/.xsession-errors full of lines like
** Message: drive = 0
** Message: volume = 0
I don't know who is generating those messages.
When I go back to the office (in a couple weeks' time) I will check
whether the latest version of Nautilus or whatever keeps generating
those messages.
