I only get the blue background, but I don't think this is relevant to
the rest of the bug.

I did actually find a similar report upstream, 
http://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=467769

Eog 2.18 (and previous versions) does have a few peculiarities, the next
version is a rewrite, and hopefully won't have these problems.
