What is the MIME type of that document? Thunderbird should use the MIME
type contained in the email, not the extension nor the contents. If it
is recognized as a file for which abiword is the default (like RTF or MS
Word), this is expected.

What happens when you open this file in nautilus? Does OOo correctly
appear as the default?
