The screensaver comes back from its slumber whenever the notification daemon displays a notification on the desktop (e.g. incoming e-mail, an audio track starting to play, an IM contact becoming on-line, etc.). Whenever this happens the "enter password" dialog pops up. I'm afraid that this also prevents the screen from entering energy saving mode as long as the events are fired.

I don't know exactly when this started happening. I think that when GNOME 2.20.1/2 started entering unstable, i.e. about a week or two ago.
