Bug#454986: gnome-power-manager: cannot suspend

I have two partitions in this laptop, one  Debian/Etch
and the other Debian/Sid

In etch I can suspend using the gnome applet menu.

In sid, when I try to suspend using the gnome applet the laptop the
screen goes black as if it was suspending, but immediatly after , it
comes back to life again and it locks the screen. That is , it thinks
that it did suspend but it does not.

In sid, if I type
 echo standby > /sys/power/state
as root, the laptop suspends.

In both installs,
$ id
uid=226(and) gid=1000(prova) gruppi=29(audio),46(plugdev),107(netdev),112(powerdev),1000(prova)

I am a bit lost... I tried to track down the problem but I failed.
