 By an extraordinary coincidence, I just uploaded a fix for a very
 similar bug in gnome-panel 2.14.3-5: could you check whether it solves
 your particular problem?

 It's in incoming.debian.org, and will be available in the archive
 tomorrow.

  * New patch, 30_panel-menu-items_notify-egg-recent-changes, to notify egg
