Yes, this problem is known and fixed in later versions.

Because new releases contain new bugs. We are trying to release etch
right now and don't want to risk that a new version introduces more
problems than the version we know to work (with some problem, yes, but
generally OK). We will of course update the packages as soon etch is
released, and you can already get new packages from experimental, as you
noted.

So this bug boils down to a request for a newer upstream version, so I'm
retitling and merging it accordingly.
