i've checked the sidebar behavior on the latest sid/etch version of totem (
2.16.4-2). it is no different than as described in my original report, so i
am reopening this bug.

when i press the "sidebar" button, the sidebar is created within the current
window, and the window stays the same size, which is good and what i
expect. however, when i close the sidebar, the sidebar is removed, and the
window size is reduced to compensate for the missing sidebar. this is bad
because users do not like applications deciding to resize their windows
(especially since they had sized the window to something that they liked to
begin with).

when the sidebar is closed, the window size should remain the same, and the
visualization should be enlarged to make up for the now missing sidebar.

thanks for the hard work.
