That's really strange as it does work for me in my regular sid
environment.

Hmmm. If I build it in pbuilder, I also see that it does not work...
For cdebconf we used another solution, but that depends on an RPATH being
present in the output of objdump (and requires dpkg-dev 1.14.5 because of
#427988):
$ objdump -p debian/cdebconf-gtk-udeb/usr/lib/cdebconf/frontend/gtk.so
Dynamic Section:
[...]
NEEDED libcairo.so.2
[...]
RPATH /usr/lib/cdebconf:/usr/lib/libcairo-directfb/lib
But I don't see an RPATH defined in the pango libs, and maybe that is not
such a good alternative anyway as lintian seems not to like it:
W: cdebconf-gtk-udeb udeb: binary-or-shlib-defines-rpath
./usr/lib/cdebconf/frontend/gtk.so /usr/lib/cdebconf:/usr/lib/libcairo-directfb/lib
I'm out of ideas here.
