I doubt this is caused by gconf2, but you can check whether gconf-editor
works correctly.

A better start would be to install the debugging packages for at least
GTK+, GLib and GnomeVFS, then provide a backtrace of the application
when it hangs. See http://wiki.debian.org/HowToGetABacktrace for
explanations.
