I have no idea if it supports that variable, but I'm happy to help
finding out if you tell me how. Starting it with
XSCREENSAVER_WINDOW=some_stuff_here electricsheep doesn't seem to make a
difference.

"Cannot retrieve sheep" sounds like a temporary server problem.
