No, it does not seem to happen if I use the shortcut keys.

It *does* happen if I use the scroll wheel on the icon or slider, or
if I click on the +/- buttons on the slider, or if I drag the slider,
or if I use the up/down or +/- keys with the volume slider open.

To further muddy the waters: if I open the volume control (by
double-clicking the volume icon) and drag any of the stereo sliders around
other than PCM, the left-right link may break, and/or the volume may
flicker between *actually* muted and not (as in actually affecting the
real volume level and showing up in alsamixer, unlike the volume icon which
only misrepresented the volume as muted).  This may or may not represent
a separate bug.
