Hi,

I think I can reproduce this, what seems to happen for me is that
gtk-window-decorator is still running after metacity --replace is run. I
need to kill that process before launching metacity again.

Can you see if you have the same problem by checking if compiz or 
gtk-window-decorator still are running?
