Bug#476762: xchat-gnome: Memory usage skyrockets in settings

Whenever I go to the settings in xchat-gnome, memory usage skyrockets.
The first time I went to the settings I managed to closed them quickly
enough to get away; the second time I had to do a hard reboot because my
system was virtually unuseable.
The third time (I wanted to undo a setting I did in the first try), I
managed to kill xchat before it could take down my system again.

top output just before the kill:

As you can see, the memory use explosion seems to be X related.
After killing xorg, memory useage of Xorg went down to 'sane' levels
again, right now it is at about 7m shared.

When starting xchat-gnome but not opening the settings dialog, things
are still pretty normal:

The setting I was changing in the first place was keyword highlighting,
I doubt it is responsible for the memory usage.
