i'm the type of person that likes fancy visualizations when listening to 
music.  and there are many out there just like me.  in fact, i am trying to 
get my brother to move to linux, but he couldn't get his fancy
visualizations to work in totem, and he was quite disappointed.

the problem is that totem fails to detect many of the available 
visualization libraries -- the big one being projectm (which enables 
support for the winamp visualization format, milkdrop).

for example, if one has installed libvisual-0.4-plugins and
libvisual-projectm, there are many visualization libraries installed to
/usr/lib/libvisual.  however, many of these libraries are not made available
in totem's edit->preferences->display dialog.  the libraries that are 
installed, but missing are libprojectM_libvisual.so, actor_gltest.so, 
actor_madspin.so, and actor_nastyfft.so.
