You can already create such shortcuts by clicking Places->Connect to
server.

However this is going to change (for worse) in nautilus 2.22, which
shows internal mounts made by gvfs on the desktop, regardless of their
usefulness. I will start to look into this issue once we make 2.22 the
default.
