Hello, I had a similar problem to yours with Japanese characters in an i386 lenny environment, but it happened with fonts included in debian. It seems fixed with the upgrade to cairo 1.4.14-1 now, could you check whether the cairo update fixes your problem too? Regards, Pier Luigi Pau
