With my test code commented out (i.e. with deb-gview almost ready for a
0.2.0 release):
$ sudo ./src/deb-gview http://ftp.debian.org/debian/pool/main/g/gpe-tetris/gpe-tetris_0.6.4-1_i386.deb
works perfectly but isn't how I expected to have to do it.
