Bug#481990: gnome-power-manager: turns backlight on when lid closed

I'm having a problem on an Inspiron 9400 notebook with the onboard Intel
chip. The backlight turns off very briefly when closing the lid, but
then turns back on and stays on. This is a recent occurrence -- before a
recent upgrade the backlight remained off. Now the laptop gets very hot
over time when the lid is closed.

Some more info:
- The backlight does not turn back on if I close the lid while in a
   console instead of a Gnome session.
- It also doesn't turn back on if I start a Sawfish session from GDM
   instead of a Gnome session.
- I uninstalled gnome-screensaver and the problem still occurs in Gnome.
- It doesn't matter what setting I put in the g-p-m "When laptop lid
   closed" preference: the same behavior happens with "Blank screen" and
   "Do nothing" in both "On AC Power" and "On Battery Power"
- I updated to the latest xserver-xorg-video-intel drivers via git and
   nothing changed from the stock version 2:2.3.1-1.
