i hope gdm is configured as my default display manager. it's the only
display manager i have installed. but i'm not sure how to check for
sure if the system knows that gdm is the default.

# more /etc/X11/default-display-manager
/usr/bin/gdm

is this good enough?

# /etc/init.d/gdm start
Starting GNOME Display Manager: gdm#

but gdm is never actually started. also it may be interesting that it
does not properly give a new line after the statement about starting
gdm. the prompt is as i've shown it, immediately after "gdm" instead
of on the next line.
