Indeed, GTK+ ignores the defaults in fontconfig, and instead, detects
the subpixel ordering dynamically in a per-screen fashion, which is a
vastly superior approach. 

If you really want to override this behavior, you can configure it by
setting the Xft.rgba X resource (in ~/.Xresources).
