All I know is I installed gdm and xfce and couldn't start xfce. I
tracked it down to gnome-settings-daemon being started, which prevents
xfce4-mcs-manager from starting even though it is an xfce session.

Perhaps gnome-session is being started which starts
gnome-settings-daemon, but the point remains if gnome-session and
gnome-settings-daemon are installed I can't start an xfce session (and
since I don't install gnome they are only being installed because of a
bug in aptitude, but that's a separate issue, described in the clone of
this report).

Perhaps gdm is starting gnome-session but shouldn't be because I want
xfce. Either way there is a grave bug because it means that users of
XFCE4 can't install and use xfce simply by selecting the task that is
for that purpose.

It also means that one cannot run xfce and gnome side-by-side.

Regards,

Daniel
