Use the capabilities offered by the xrandr X extension for gtk+.
Some work is done by Soren Sandmann for fedora. Also it is included in the (stable) 
gtk+ version 2.14 and in the devel version 2.13.
A backport to the lenny version would help all this people with changing monitor 
configurations (laptops). Otherwise they have always effects like hidden panels or
buttons if they use xrandr.
