Ok, first of all, I _am_ getting the thumbnails problem. I
misunderstood the initial report. I have linked to three screenshots
that demonstrate the problem. [1][2][3] Again, this is on two
separate but very recent Lenny amd64 clean installs with not much in
the way of extra software other than the default Lenny GNOME desktop
install.

Anyway, for the backtrace for gnome-appearance-properties ("g-a-p"), I
followed the instructions at the wiki page and rebuilt the
gnome-control-center ("g-c-c"), which is what provides g-a-p. After
rebuilding the g-c-c package, I was left with three debs:
capplets-data_2.22.2.1-1_all.deb,
gnome-control-center_2.22.2.1-1_amd64.deb, and
libgnome-window-settings1_2.22.2.1-1_amd64.deb. I installed all three
debs.

I then ran g-c-c through gdb per the wiki instructions but after
closing out g-c-c and typing 'bt' I get ''No stack." I then ran just
gnome-appearance-properties through gdb and same result -- No stack.
I checked that debugging symbols were correctly built for g-a-p [4]
and g-c-c [5]. There is a lot of output so I assume this means
debugging is turned on ok?

As far as what g-a-p is doing while pegged at 100% CPU the answer is:
it's operating normally. I can select different themes, different wm
properties, different GTK controls etc. Other than the thumbnail
problem, g-c-c and g-a-p both seem to work fine. I can quit the
application normally by clicking the close button. It's just that
shortly after g-a-p starts, then CPU goes to 100%. If just g-c-c is
used or if I use any other component of g-c-c, then it does not peg
the CPU at all. Everything is fine. The problem seems to be limited
to g-a-p.

I am happy to continue help debugging -- just let me know what you
want me to do and how to do it.

Thanks for looking into this.
