No problem with lenny stock install with Desktop environnement (checked during installation)
to open files when launching eog o directly open a file:

$ eog /tmp/pics/computer_0020.jpg
$ ls -al /tmp/pics/
total 1268

Can you check for right on files eog supposed to open after the first one ?
Additionaly, you can launch eog with debug options like --g-fatal-warnings for example.
