heh, I had the same idea, see my other mail, which I sent before I got
yours. 

But your conclusion was better than mine. Indeed, if I make sure I press
a key before Xmodmap runs, everything is fine. OTOH, if I am careful not
to press a key, before it runs, it is broken. So it does not depend on
the time passed, but rather whether a key as been pressed first.

I hope that helps to track down the bug.
