Bug#542664: purging epiphany-browser marked unrelated packages for autoremoval
Bernhard Kuemel
bernhard at bksys.at
Thu Aug 20 17:59:42 UTC 2009
Package: epiphany-browser
Version: 2.26.1-1
Severity: critical
Justification: breaks unrelated software
I tried to install Internet Explorer to view a web site designed for IE.
Downloaded IE8 from microsoft.com, installed wine, installed current
wine beta from winehq. Didn't work. Tried viewing the web site with epiphany
(already installed) and lynx. Installed and tried konqueror, galeon.
Removed epiphany, galeon and konquerer in one apt-get call.
Then a lot of packages were marked for autoremoval (The following
packages were automatically installed and are no longer required). I
thought, hmm, quite many, but I also removed several, possibly large
packages, so I didn't check and started 'apt-get autoremove'. While it
started removing packages I noticed it would remove important or
unrelated packages like
gcalctool
gnome-desktop-environment
gnome-games
gedit
whois
totem-common
arj
gnome-volume-manager
gdm
evince
gnuchess
transmission-common
and interrupted apt-get. Reinstalling epiphany didn't remove the
autoremove mark of the packages.
I'm now clueless if I should apt-get install all these packages which
would prevent them from autoremoval, but OTOH also mark them manually
installed which in some cases would be incorrect. I don't know, which
packages are still needed, and which not (e.g. libbrasero-media0 ekiga
libtelepathy2 libgmythupnp0, which I have no idea what they are about).
I include the shell output of this session. You may scan it from bottom
up to where the big block of packages marked for autoremoval appears
first.
Quite possibly this bug may be unrelated to epiphany or have a wrong
severity.

Description: Microsoft Windows Compatibility Layer
While Wine is usually thought of as a Microsoft Windows emulator, the Wine
developers would prefer that users thought of Wine as a Windows compatibility
layer for Linux. Wine does not require MS Windows, but it can use native system
dll files in place of its own if they are available.
.
This package includes a program loader, which allows unmodified Windows
binaries to run under compatible hardware. This package also includes the
library that implements the Wine project's free version of the Windows API,
allowing successful running of programs ported directly from Windows.
