Bug#551590: metacity: system bell inaudible in X

The bell stopped working again after the following upgrade and
restarting the X session:

xserver-xorg               1:7.4+4     1:7.5~3
xserver-xorg-core          2:1.6.5-1   2:1.7.2-2
xserver-xorg-input-evdev   1:2.2.5-1   1:2.3.1-1
xserver-xorg-video-radeon  1:6.12.3-1  1:6.12.4-1

Again, in an X session without Gnome running, the bell works correctly.

My wild guess is that the breakage may caused by xserver-xorg-core no
longer using HAL since 1.7.2-1 and Gnome somehow relying on it. Please
excuse me for not researching it properly, but I am a bit tired of
tracking issues like this anymore. I switched to Xfce instead, which I
probably should have done much earlier, for a few other reasons.
