Bug#514216: gnome-desktop-environment: lenny - "System Sounds" do not give sound, MP3 and CD do give sound

After installing Debian Lenny as a standard desktop with File and Print 
server options selected, then logging into gnome and manually installing 
gnome-audio and enabling "System Sounds" from the gnome menu, "System -> 
Preferences -> Sound -> Sounds tab -> "Enable software sound mixing 
(ESD)" and "Play system sounds", adn then selecting the "Play" button 
for any of the system sounds, no sound is produced.

Sound is working from Music CDs and MP3s.
If either Adobe Flashplayer Plugin or sun-java are installed, then these 
programs do produce sound.

It seems that it is only the gnome desktop that is not able to produce 
sound, other debian lenny applications which produce sound are able to 
produce sound.

1) Could you also please explain to me how gnome produces its "System 
Sounds". That is, what packages/libraries does gnome use to play "System 
Sounds" ?  Knowing this would help me to better understand gnome's sound 
and I would be more able to report useful information.

2) Can you confirm whether your able to verify this issue, that for a 
standard desktop installation with gnome-audio installed and enable, 
that Debian Lenny does not make sounds for "System Sounds" ?
