When I select my usb microphone (built-in my logitech quickcam pro for 
notebooks) as default sound capture and I start gnome-sound-recorder I 
get an error message: "Your audio capture settings are invalid. Please 
correct them in the Multimedia settings" and the program doesn't even 
start. In fact, gnome-sound-recorder has no capabilities of using USB 
microphones at all, even though mine is supported by ALSA (I can record 
audio with the arecord command). 

I believe this bug is still present in newer versions, as evidenced by 
this Ubuntu bug report:
